Intended Audience Professional development of our water professionals is essential to capacity development and sustainability of our nation’s infrastructure. ATTAC’s mission is to provide professional training for new operators and continuing education and skill development for existing small system operators. Our web-based courses provide access for those in rural areas where in-residence training is not available, and small system operators everywhere who desire the convenience of training available on their schedule. Our courses were developed for the small system operators who want training tools that are visual and interactive and relevant to the job they are doing. Course Time-frame You have three months (90 days) to complete a course. If you do not complete the course you will not receive CEUs. You will not receive a refund once you begin a course. You will not receive a refund once you begin a course or if you do not begin a course after 14 days of receiving your enrollment email. If ATTAC cancels a course, you will be notified and refunded 100% of your fees. Continuing Education Units (CEUs)CEUs are currently only approved in the State of Alaska. A certificate of completion will be issued upon successful completion of a course. Students must receive an overall score of 85% or better in order to pass a course (Small Treated and Small Untreated require 100%). Students are expected to complete their own work. - This short course covers all aspects of sampling public water supplies for coliform analysis according to the Total Coliform Rule of the Safe Drinking Water Act. Topics covered include the sample site plan, selecting good sampling points, the step-by-step procedure for collecting a potable water sample, sample preservation and transport, and other issues such as repeat and special samples, recordkeeping, and public notification of violations.
- This short course explains terms related to cross-connections in potable water systems, the significance of cross-connections to public health, reviews basic distribution system hydraulics, and discusses the theory of backflow and backsiphonage. The module also covers backflow prevention methods and devices, backflow assembly testing, cross-connection control programs, and ends with examples of potential cross-connection situations and corrective actions.
- This short course reviews the importance of the chemical feed pump in potable water treatment. It covers the theory of operation of diaphragm chemical feed pumps, the parts of the pump, the chemical feed system (including solution storage tank, associated lines and valves, and electrical controls), pump controls, the procedure for pump calibration, pump maintenance, troubleshooting, and safety.
- This course is a 100% self-paced web course. The course will cover the supervision and management aspects of a certified laboratory. Topics will include a review of sampling, sample handling and preservation, chain of custody issues, references for approved methods, quality assurance and control (QA/QC), data and records management, laboratory safety and chemical hygiene plans, staffing, supplies management and state and federal regulatory compliance.
- This short course introduces sewage treatment lagoons and discusses major advantages and disadvantages of their use. The course presents the types of lagoons, the theory of biological stabilization activity within the lagoons, the physical components of lagoons systems, factors affecting waste treatment in a lagoon, routine inspection and maintenance, operational tests and measurements, treatment process control strategies, mathematic calculations related to lagoons, and lagoon safety.

CEUs are currently only approved in the State of Alaska.While the Small Treated course is worth 0.7 CEUs, 0.5 of those CEUs are considered a repeat of the Small Untreated course. If you've already taken the Small Untreated course, you may only receive 0.2 additional CEUs for completing the Small Treated Course.
The Small Treated Water Systems course was originally designed for operators of small treated water systems in Alaska. A small treated water system in Alaska is one that serves less than 500 people, has less than 100 service connections, and adds only one chemical to the water. The course is based on the Operator's Guide to Small Treated Public Water Systems in Alaska. Click here to find out if the Small Treated Water System Course is the right course for you. The Small Treated Course is divided into seven modules. You will navigate through the course screens similar to watching a slide show. There are interactive tasks throughout the course. There is a quiz at the end of each chapter. All quizzes used in this course were designed to reinforce learning of the course material. Quizzes must be corrected to 100% in order for you to move to the next section. Quizzes may be taken an unlimited number of times for you to practice test taking and review subject matter.
Passing the course does not mean that you're certified. You must pass a State of Alaska certification exam to become certified. The education prerequisite for the small treated exam is completion of high school or GED. The experience prerequisite for the small untreated exam is six months of experience operating a small treated system OR completion of an approved course. - This short course reviews the concept of pH, its importance to water and wastewater treatment, and how pH is measure. The theory of the operation of the pH probe and pH meters is discussed and procedures explained for pH meter calibration and making pH measurements. Care of the pH probes and troubling shooting probes and meters are also discussed.
- This short course reviews the purpose of well and distribution system disinfection and chlorine products available for use as disinfectants. The course presents the procedure for well disinfection, disinfection of wells and small distributions system together, disinfection of distribution system separately, and disinfection of finished water storage tanks. It also covers sampling and bacteriological testing after disinfection and safety issues related to the disinfection procedures.
